Allen Covert’s name might not be recognizable but his face draws immediate reactions from Adam Sandler fans. Covert’s had a supporting role in each of Adam Sandler’s movies, with the exception of “Billy Madison.”
What kind of crazy character did they give you this time?Drew Barrymore has a memory problem, and when they go to the institute to discuss her problem, I'm the example of how things could be worse. I'm going to leave it at that for right now, but that's my job, to show her that things aren't that bad. You could be a lot worse off. My name's 10 Second Tom in the movie. Basically my memory lasts only 10 seconds.
Did you research mental conditions?
I think we just had a stopwatch. We actually, when we were doing some rewrites on the movie and stuff, we did a lot of research. It's a comedy, but we still have to stay in the realm that this is actually believable, so we did some research.
Do you have a different look in the film?
Oh no, actually in this one, I kind of look semi-normal.
How do you transform, gain and lose weight, and come back?
I don't know. It's just more fun that way for me, so I don't mind. Plus, someone says, "Hey, gain weight." Gaining - it's not the hard part. But then afterwards, what usually happens is when we're mixing or something, I'll see it on the big screen and realize how gross I am, and then I'll start dieting immediately.
What’s your favorite pig-out food?
Donuts. Donuts, bring 'em on by the box, by the dozen, anything…
Will this movie offend amnesiacs?
Oh no, we don't make fun of anyone for having a problem. I would say go see the movie and it's all about actually trying to help someone get through the problem they're having because the guy loves her so much. I would say don't jump to conclusions. Go check it out because we try not to offend. You can't help offend. Everyone gets offended at some point or another.
What's next for you?
We're getting ready to shoot a movie called “Grandma's Boy” for me. Then we're going to do “Deuce Bigelow 2” and “The Longest Yard,” so we'll be doing those in the next six months.
Do you play the lead?
In “Grandma's Boy.” I play the world's oldest video game tester and I get kicked out of my apartment. I move in with my grandmother and her two roommates. We'll see what happens.
